The Gay-Straight Alliance is a new club on campus that was started late last school year. This club was formed to support homosexual students and it aims to bring tolerance to the campus among all students. Under the direction of Special Education teacher Takako Hankins, the gay-straight alliance welcomes anyone who wishes to support fellow students and family. The meetings consist of discussing current events and activities. For the moment only 10 or fewer people go to the meetings, but Hankins says that this club is for anyone and everyone.
The meetings are held after school on the 2nd Wednesdays of each month in room 400. A new activity on the agenda for the Gay-Straight Alliance is the Day of Silence, which will be on April 16, 2010. The Day of Silence is the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network’s annual day of action to protest the bullying and harassment of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) students and their supporters. Students take a day-long vow of silence to symbolically represent the silencing of LGBT students and their supporters. “Come on by,” Hankins says. “You have the right to be safe and you’re not alone.”
